When reading books or internet information concerning Aromatherapy you will find many terms that are often specific to Aromatherapy.

Many of these terms are often used in other forms of therapy but some have specific meanings within Aromatherapy, "Absolute" being a good example.

Below we have listed some of these terms that are quite frequently used in Aromatherapy with a brief description of each of them.

Glossary Of Aromatherapy Terms
Absolute Similar to essential oils, absolutes are concentrated, highly-aromatic, oily mixtures extracted from plants. that require the use of solvent extraction techniques or more traditionally, through enfleurage. 
   
Analgesic A substance which relieves or reduces pain
   
Antibacterial
Destroys or stops the growth of bacteria.
 
Antimicrobial
A substance that helps the body to resist, inhibit, or destroy pathogenic (disease-causing) microbes.
 
Antispasmodic
A substance that relieves involuntary muscular contraction or cramps.
 
Antiseptic
A substance that destroys bacteria and prevents infection and the growth of other micro-organisms
 
Arborescent
Tree-like.
 
Astringent
A substance that contracts or shrinks tissues thereby decreasing secretions and controlling bleeding.
 
Carcinogenic Substance that can produce cancer  
   
Carminative
A Substance that eases abdominal discomfort and bloating , and encourages the release of excess wind from the bowels.
 
Concretes
Extracts that are obtained with non-aqueous solvents, in a waxy form, from fresh, natural raw plant materials, They used in the production of absolutes.
 
Cytophylacte This is a sustance which stimulates skin cell growth.
   
Decongestant Has the property of relieving blockage or clogging e.g. excess phlegm.
   
Depurative
Helps to purify the blood, detoxifying mainly by increasing urination.
 
Desquamation The peeling off or shedding of dead skin cells
   
Diuretic
Helps to increase urine flow.
 
Emmenogogues
Herbs which stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus; often used to stimulate menstruation
 
Emollient A substance having a soothing or soothing effect.
   
Enfleurage
A process of extracting fragrance from flowers by using unscented fats to capture the essential oils.
 
Expectorant
A substance used to cause the expulsion of phlegm from the lungs
 
Febrifuge Having the property of reducing fever
   
Fungicidal Can kill or inhibit fungal growth
   
Galactagogue Can increase and encouragenatural milk flow.
   
Hepatotoxicity
A substance that has the capacity to cause damage to the liver.
 
Holistic Treating the whole person.
   
Homoeostasis The natural bance within ones system, can be upset by stress and shock.
   
Hydrophobic
Having a low affinity for water; tends not to absorb water; will not dissolve in or mix with or be wetted by water
 
Hypertension Abnormally high blood-pressure
   
Hypotension Abnormally low blood-pressure
   
Lymphatic System The drainage sytem of the body. A vast network of capillary vessels which are connected to the veinous system transporting lymph through the body. Lymph contains products of metabolic waste.
   
Maceration
A method of extracting oils where the plant flowers are soaked in hot oil to have their cell membranes ruptured and the hot oil then absorbs the essence
 
Photosensitivity
Having a sensitive reaction to, or able to be affected by, light
 
Phototoxicity
Adverse effects due to exposure to light, especially effecting the skin
 
Rubefacient
Warms the skin and increases blood flow.
 
Sudorific
A substance that increase perspiration.
 
Sensitisation
Sensitisation is an allergic response to an essential oil. Usually not the first application but later applications of the same or similar oil can produce severe inflammation.
 
Tonic A substance that imparts a generally beneficial and invigorating effect on the body.
   
Vulnerary
A substance used in healing and treating wounds;
